I’ve been writing professionally for more than thirty years – everything from newspaper and magazine articles to corporate communications, poetry, long-form narrative nonfiction, short stories, and novels for young adults. Nowadays, I write nonfiction books for children and teens, novels, and the occasional essay or article for adults. I write about all kinds of things, but some of my favorite topics are animals (especially horses and dogs!), history and the fascinating lives of the famous and not-so-famous, the natural world, and our enduring bond with the creatures who share our planet.
I believe in bridges and intersections: between young and old, human and animal, history and memory, fact and truth, Us and Them. I think it’s in these places, where divergent paths cross, that we can learn the most about ourselves and the world around us.
I believe in stories, too. They’re what make us human, and how we make sense of our lives – as much a part of us as our DNA.
